History Of Great Apes of Harambee:
It was founded in 2006 by Dr. William C. Stanley and his wife, Deborah. On a trip inspired by the Great Apes of Harambee, the couple took to Africa, where they witnessed the destruction of habitat and exploitation of great apes firsthand.
The Great Apes of Harambee is currently home to twelve resident apes: seven chimpanzees, three bonobos, and two gorillas. All of the Great Apes of Harambee residents are former laboratory animals, entertainment performers, or victims of the bushmeat trade.
It is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). GFAS is the only internationally recognized accrediting body for animal sanctuaries. Great Apes Of Harambee’s Impact:
The Great Apes of Harambee is a sanctuary for great apes in captivity and the wild. They provide refuge to former laboratory animals, entertainers who have been victims, or performers who were shot during filming activities while collecting food at funerals where there was often bush meat used as part of festivities.
The team is working to create authentic experiences for people by providing a place where humans do not dominate the animals. The sanctuary lets the animals build nests and plant crops that they can forage. They also offer educational opportunities to learn more about great apes in a naturalistic setting.
